This morning I finally got around to reading the Magazine supplements that come with the Saturday Guardian. In place of the usual fashion drivel, was an excellent article by Dylan Jones.I am now fascinated by the colourful world of the Sapuers of Bakongo.
Daniele Tamagni's new book (above) sounds like a must buy for anyone interested in art, classic mens fashion and social anthropology.
The Sapeurs themselves are not just pretty peacocks, they are active pacifists with a strict moral code and high aesthetic. As Dylan puts it, 'The SAPE is a religion of sorts...
