The Aztec Sun god Tonatiuh(Codex Telleriano-Remensis,16th century).
When I first saw the Sunlight Collection by Zinaida Likhacheva I imagined some lost tribe of Aztecs living as gypsys. The romance and geometric details of the collection could conjure no other images to my mind. However, like other groups in antiquity the ancient Ukrainians worshiped a sun god of their own called 'Dazhboh'. The geometric patterns on the clothes are reminiscent of designs found on 'Pysanka' (Traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs) and Ukrainian embroidery where symbols once relating to Dazhboh are still used today.
Zinaida developed the collection with fellow designer and Slavic mythology expert, Letitsia Kovaliova.
“Having thoroughly studied the symbols in Ukrainian embroidery, I have come to the conclusion that the mystic art of my ancestors will appeal to a new generation."
“It will become their talisman, a never-ending link between the past, present and future.”
-Zinaida Likhacheva
