Review: Arepa

A taste of Venezuela on Queen...

I ordered the Adobo Roasted Pork (anatto, caramelised onions) and my husband ordered the Carne Mechada (Shredded flank steak, tomato, garlic, pepper cumin). The arepa itself is a small cornmeal muffin (like a cross between polenta and an english muffin). They came served in a basket with a small side of coleslaw. Three accompanying sauces were also brought to the table, a blow-your-head-off yellow sauce, a green sauce (cilantro?) and a pink sauce (shallot?). The later two sauces were delicious and should be squirted onto each bite of your arepa. Although the portions looked small the fillings packed a generous portion of meat so we were quite full afterwards. Like the Drake BBQ's pulled pork, after having my arepa I could think of nothing else. The meat literally melts in your mouth. I imagine that this would be especially satisfying to eat on a cold day.

The food sounds so yummy and there is nothing better than meat that just melts in the mouth. I had some shredded beef nachos today and it was the same...so yummy! Love your photos of the restaurant!
